Apple, Google and Microsoft want to get rid of user passwords in favor of 'passkeys'

The article on Ars Technica discusses a joint initiative by Apple, Google, and Microsoft to replace passwords with a new Bluetooth proximity technology. This method, known as proximity authentication, uses devices that users already have on them to confirm their identity. Unlike traditional passwords, which can be easily forgotten or stolen, this technology aims to enhance security significantly. The system works by having the user approach a device, such as a computer or phone, with their mobile device in hand. By utilizing Bluetooth, the login process is expected to become much faster and more convenient, eliminating many of the vulnerabilities associated with password usage.
