The sky appears blue due to a phenomenon known as Rayleigh scattering. When sunlight enters the Earth's atmosphere, it scatters in different directions by air molecules. Sunlight is a mixture of all colors, and blue light is scattered more effectively than other colors because it has a shorter wavelength. This phenomenon is why we see the sky in shades of blue. Additionally, when the sun is low in the sky, such as during sunrise or sunset, the light passes through a larger amount of atmosphere, causing colors like yellow and red to become more prominent. Consequently, the sky can take on various colors depending on the time of day and atmospheric conditions. Thus, Rayleigh scattering is key to understanding why we see a blue sky and how its color changes under different conditions.
